Why Windows users need another 3D viewer

Microsoft deprecated 3D Viewer in February 2026 and removed it from Microsoft Store on July 1, 2026. Existing installations can continue to work, but the app is no longer available for new Store installations.

Microsoft also disabled FBX support by default in 3D Viewer beginning in February 2024. Tridi Viewer provides a current, local Windows workflow for opening FBX and other common 3D interchange files.

What Tridi Viewer can open instead

3D and animation

FBX, OBJ, COLLADA, PLY, STL, 3MF, PMX, Alembic, GLB, glTF, and VRM.

USD scenes

USD, USDA, USDC, and USDZ with a documented supported subset.

CAD files

STEP, STP, IGES, IGS, and BREP with tessellated geometry and available edge topology.

Local processing

Model data is processed on the Windows device and is not uploaded by the app.

Common replacement use cases

  • Open a model from File Explorer for a quick visual check without uploading it to a browser service.
  • Review an FBX, GLB, OBJ, or other asset before handing it to an artist, engineer, client, or real-time pipeline.
  • Inspect animation clips, materials, textures, UVs, source topology, and render channels when a final shaded preview is not enough.
  • View tessellated STEP, IGES, or BREP geometry and available native CAD edges without starting a full CAD editor.

Inspect more than the final render

  • Real-time physically based rendering.
  • Source wireframe and native CAD edge inspection when the importer provides them.
  • Object, material, texture, animation, and render-pass inspection.
  • Animation playback with clip selection, timeline scrubbing, speed, and looping controls.

Format support is intentionally documented as a supported subset. Complex exporter-specific data, proprietary shaders, and some scene features may not map to the viewer.

A focused viewer rather than an editor

Tridi Viewer is designed for opening, inspecting, diagnosing, and exporting supported model data. It does not replace mesh modeling, sculpting, rig authoring, parametric CAD editing, slicing, or scene assembly. The original file stays unchanged while you navigate the viewport and use inspection panels.

One model is active at a time. Opening another file replaces the current model, and dropping several model files loads only the first. Supported export targets are GLB, glTF, and static OBJ; export does not imply that every source-specific feature can be preserved.

Windows and graphics requirements

The current package requires an x64 PC running Windows 10 version 1809 or newer, or Windows 11. Tridi Viewer attempts to initialize Vulkan first and falls back to OpenGL when needed. Dense meshes, large textures, CAD tessellation, and animation caches can increase both system and graphics memory use.

Tridi Viewer is currently a public beta, so check the release notes and the format support table when compatibility with a particular pipeline feature matters.
