Review FBX assets without opening a full DCC application

Tridi Viewer opens .fbx files as a native Windows desktop application. Use it to check an exported asset, inspect its scene structure, and play supported animation clips before handing the file to another artist or pipeline.

FBX can carry a broad 3D scene and may be written in binary or ASCII form under the same extension. Results can vary with the exporter, FBX version, and application-specific features, so Tridi Viewer focuses on the renderable mesh, material, texture, hierarchy, and animation data it can represent.

Common FBX viewing use cases

  • Review a model handoff from Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, CAD software, or another content tool.
  • Check object hierarchy, transforms, material slots, and local texture dependencies before import into an engine.
  • Play supported skeletal, transform, and morph animation to catch missing clips or deformation problems.
  • Inspect source topology, UVs, normals, and diagnostic render passes without changing the original file.

Supported FBX data

  • Polygon meshes and scene hierarchy.
  • Common materials and local texture dependencies.
  • Linear transform and morph animation.
  • Bones and four-influence skinning.
  • Source topology when available from the importer.

Inspect the data that reached the file

The Objects panel exposes the imported scene structure and selection. Materials, textures, UV View, Solid Wireframe, and render passes help isolate whether a problem belongs to geometry, topology, UV coordinates, or shading data. The animation panel provides clip selection, timeline scrubbing, playback speed, and looping for supported tracks.

If materials look incomplete, keep referenced textures in their expected relative locations and confirm that material and texture import options are enabled. Texture path rules vary between exporters, so preserve the original asset folder structure when possible.

FBX support boundaries

FBX behavior varies between exporters. Complex application-specific constraints, shaders, animation layers, procedural systems, cameras, lights, and metadata may not map to Tridi Viewer. Mesh-swap animation is not supported. For pipeline acceptance, compare the preview with the source application and the intended destination engine.
