Open common USD file variants
Tridi Viewer recognizes .usd, text-based .usda, binary .usdc, and packaged .usdz files on Windows. Supported model data is processed locally and displayed in a real-time viewport.
Universal Scene Description is built for composing rich scenes from layers, references, variants, schemas, and assets. The extension describes the container or encoding, not a guarantee that every authored scene feature can be flattened into a general-purpose viewer.
Common USD viewing use cases
- Preview supported geometry and hierarchy from a film, VFX, animation, product, or real-time pipeline.
- Check transforms, display color, opacity, UVs, normals, and supported preview materials.
- Inspect source topology and supported skeletal, blend-shape, transform, or time-sampled animation.
- Review the renderable contents of a USDZ delivery package without uploading it to a web service.
Supported USD data
- Hierarchy, polygon meshes, transforms, normals, and UVs.
- Display color and opacity.
- Supported UsdPreviewSurface material networks.
- Source topology and supported transform, skeletal, blend-shape, or time-sampled animation.
Composition, materials, and packages
A USDZ file is a package that can contain a root USD layer and related assets. Ordinary USD layers may also depend on external files. Preserve the package or referenced directory structure when moving a scene, because a valid layer can still appear incomplete when its dependencies are unavailable.
UsdPreviewSurface networks are supported only where their data maps to the viewer. Production render delegates, custom schemas, application plug-ins, and renderer-specific shader graphs can carry meanings that a general viewer cannot reproduce. Use the Materials and Textures panels and render passes to identify the subset that imported.
USD features that need another tool
Instancing and PointInstancer are not implemented. Unsupported required scene or shader semantics can stop import, and complex production USD compositions may not reproduce their source application exactly. Cameras, lights, physics, variants, payload behavior, and custom metadata should be verified in a USD-aware authoring or validation tool when they are important.
Exporting a time-sampled USD scene captures the currently displayed static sample. USD and USDZ export are not available in this release.
