STEP and STP Viewer for Windows

Open STEP and STP CAD files on Windows, inspect tessellated assemblies, and display native B-rep edge topology.

Applies to Tridi Viewer 1.1.3 public beta. Check current format support.

Inspect STEP assemblies and CAD edges

Tridi Viewer opens .step and .stp files on Windows and tessellates supported CAD geometry for real-time inspection. The same CAD importer also recognizes IGES, IGS, and BREP files.

STEP belongs to the ISO 10303 family for exchanging product data between engineering systems. A STEP file can preserve precise boundary-representation geometry and assembly structure rather than only display triangles. Tridi Viewer converts supported shapes into viewport geometry while retaining available native CAD edges for inspection.

Common STEP viewing use cases

  • Review a mechanical part or assembly received from a supplier, client, or another CAD system.
  • Check hierarchy, transforms, object names, colors, orientation, and overall dimensions.
  • Inspect native face boundaries and curved CAD edges without opening a parametric editor.
  • Preview a neutral exchange file before conversion, quotation, documentation, or downstream review.

Supported STEP data

  • Tessellated part and assembly geometry.
  • Hierarchy, transforms, available names, and colors.
  • Native CAD edge topology for Solid Wireframe inspection.
  • Viewport navigation, object selection, dimensions, and render controls.

Tessellation and CAD edge inspection

The shaded viewport shows tessellated triangles generated from supported CAD faces. Tessellation quality controls the visual approximation of curved surfaces: a finer result can look smoother but also increases load time, triangle count, and memory use.

Solid Wireframe uses available native B-rep curve topology, so it can show meaningful face boundaries instead of every generated display triangle. Use object selection and Dimensions for a quick structural and scale review. These tools are diagnostic; they do not evaluate manufacturing tolerances, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, or CAD-kernel validity.

Viewing, not parametric CAD editing

STEP support is intended for viewing and inspection. Tridi Viewer does not expose feature history, parametric editing, sketches, constraints, textures, UVs, skinning, or animation from CAD files. Malformed or unsupported entities can prevent import, and a successful preview does not guarantee that another CAD system will accept or reconstruct the model identically.
